BRONZE INCENSE BURNER OF A KINGFISHER – MEIJI

Référence : 2025-1446

Bronze incense-burner depicting a kingfisher with an elongated beak, resting on a lotus flower that forms its base. Its position is that of a bird of prey ready to swoop down on any potential fish. A trapdoor is provided on the animal’s back to insert incense, with the smoke escaping through two small holes in the trapdoor itself.

The kingfisher, recognizable by its brilliant plumage, is also known for its agility and precision. Its ability to plunge swiftly into the water to seize its prey has made it associated with opportunity and with grasping it decisively at the right moment. In Japan in particular, it is a symbol of good luck, and its image was used to ward off evil spirits. In Chinese mythology, it is a symbol of good fortune and is believed to bring prosperity and a happy marriage.
