Suzuribako in black lacquer with a decor in golden hira maki-e, red and silver colours depicting five Chinese children.
The inside of the lid also displays three playing Chinese children in gold, red and silver lacquer on a background of nashi-ji lacquer.
The suzuribako comes with its tray, water pot and inkstone. All of the inside is in nashi-ji lacquer.
Chinese children, called karako in Japanese, are frequently depicted in the islands’ art. They are easily recognisable by their clothes, their shoes and two tufts of hair on either side of their otherwise shaven head.
