CROW INRO – EDO

Three cases inro in ro-iro lacquer with its hira-maki-eornaments of crows with inlaid eyes in mother of pearl. The interior in nashiji lacquer. A label of a private collection in the last compartment. The ro-irolacquer technique comes in too variants, Hana-nuriet ro-iro-urushi. For this object the second technique was used, its specificity is the addition of iron oxide in the traditional carbon pigment and the tedious process of polishing gives this object its deep maroon color and its glossy finish. On one side of the decor is composed of a karstic formation on the background realized in hiro-maki-e and a couple of corvids on the foreground, made of deep black lacquer with mother of pearls inlays for their eyes. A lovely crow appears on the other side of the inro, it is contained in the last two cells of the inro, its pose suggeststhe bird iscroaking. Its is ojime is an agate pearl, but the netsuke is a rather interesting, signed piece. It represents two No theater masks attached together; they are Oniet Osofuki.
