HOKKAI BAKO IN BLACK AND GOLD LAQUER – MEIJI

Small hokkai bakoor kaioke seashells game box, of circular form with its four feet, decorated with a motive of flowers of gold lacquer on a black lacquer background.Most of the time these boxes are octagonal but sometimes it also can be round, designed to holdthe seashells used in the game kai awase (image association).These boxes were used to contain two sets of one hundred and eighty seashells each adorned with a different painted scene. The game consists in reuniting two seashell because of the similarities of their décor, presumably matching a poem.
