Namban chest in lacquer and pearl, decorated with flowers. Metal hinge in chiseled copper. The word Namban comes from namban-jin, “barbarian from the south”, used by Japanese to call the Europeans, particularly Portuguese. The Namban art grows between 1500 and 1600. Portuguese come to Japan in 1543 and develops commercial relations really sophisiticated.
