COROMANDEL SCREEN, TAOISTS IMMORTALS – CHINA, 18th

Twelve-panels screen representing scenes of the Taoist paradise.

On one side, the Immortals are riding on mushrooms-shaped clouds and fantastic animals. In the center, there is the famous buddhist scene : the washing of the white elephant and in the upper part, in a grotto with spectacular rocks, we can see Shoulao with his domed forehead and his white eyebrows and hair. The lower border has medallions with flowers, symbols of the twelve months of the year. The medallions on upper border represent « the hundred antiques ».

The reverse consists in a long calligraphy with rich border with medallions.
